I have a confession to make - I love Marie Kondo and her global ambition to “organise the world and spark joy in people’s lives”. Her decluttering and home organisation book is a revelation and this year her Netflix 'Tidying Up' series has brought her philosophy into even more homes.

Just watching an episode makes me want to get my hands on a messy cupboard or strip the bookshelves bare – but I am an organisation bore and every shelf is already uncluttered, each cupboard is ordered and my capsule wardrobe is a sight of organisational beauty!

The only tidying up regularly occurring in our house is the Lego, cars and train tracks my three boys leave scattered around and lets be honest, that kind of tidying up is boring, repetitive and doesn't spark any joy whatsoever. Neither does treading on those Lego pieces!

Today a colleague and I were talking about the KonMari method of tidying up and she said just watching the show made her feel more zen-like. It made me think that simplifying our lives is another way of nourishing the mind – physically creating space to think and breathe. We benefit from both the mindful process of clearing stuff out and the ease and satisfaction it brings when we have successfully integrated a little bit more order into our daily lives.

“So what area if your life do you want to simplify?”

I am sharing these 10 Steps To Simply Your Life hoping that one, a few or all will spark your interest! It is an adaptation of a list I received from my personal life coach six years ago. I found it an extremely positive experience to go through these steps and it really did help bring peace, energy and joy into my life.

Begin by picking the item you’re most drawn to and find ways to incorporate it into your life - I’d love to hear how you get on. I am always happy to chat about organisation: of the home, the multiple to-do lists, the conflicting work priorities and the constant call of life’s demands. I welcome your stories of what’s working well for you, what is frustrating you and where you are struggling.

10 Steps to Simplify Your Life

1. Identify what is important to you.

2. Is your current routine serving you positively?

3. What can you let go of?

4. Manage Information overload by

- developing good habits with email, social media

- disconnecting from the world

5. Start meal planning

6. Go paperless

7. Work smarter online i.e. shopping, direct debits, banking, productivity apps

8. Delegate and ask for help

9. Get rid of things you don’t use with the 3-question rule:

- Do you love it?

- Does it have a purpose?

- Does it have sentimental value?

10. Create a routine for your mornings/evenings.

If you no longer want to be an onlooker to the kind of life you want, working with a coach is a great way to make things happen. I can help you clarify what it is you want and help identify how you are going to get there.
